Seattle man gets 27 years for violent carjacking spree
A 25-year-old Seattle man was sentenced to more than 27 years in federal prison for a spree of armed carjackings.
Maar Teng Rambang was convicted of three counts of carjacking and three of the firearms-related charges - filed in 2022 - in U.S. District Court in January. He was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge John Chun, who said Rambang was responsible for serious, terrible crimes" that included shooting one of the carjacking victims and threatening the others with a handgun.
All three carjackings occurred on Nov. 7, 2022, in Kent, Bellevue and Seattle, according to a sentencing memorandum filed by federal prosecutors. He also attempted to rob a Whole Foods in Redmond, where he apparently mistook the Amazon Locker counter as a pharmacy and demanded oxycodone.
Just before noon, Rambang confronted a woman sitting in her car outside the Kent East Hill Post Office, where he ordered her out of her car at gunpoint.
Rambang drove the Toyota to the Bellevue Square Mall garage and fired his gun as he threatened another woman and demanded her vehicle.
He drove that stolen BMW to Redmond where he tried to rob the Whole Foods, then drove the BMW to Seattle's Eastlake neighborhood.
There, he carjacked a Jeep Cherokee, shooting the driver in the leg, according to court documents.
The sentencing memorandum said Rambang was found by Kent police using the Jeep's Sirius XM radio subscription to track the vehicle to a fast-food restaurant.
"The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Rambang sped away," according to the sentencing memo. "A high-speed chase ensued with Rambang driving at speeds above 100 miles per hour and otherwise driving extremely recklessly."
The pursuit lasted nearly six minutes and ended when an officer successfully executed a "precision immobilization technique," also known as a PIT maneuver, to force him off the road. Police recovered a loaded Glock handgun from his pocket, the document says.
"It is just by luck that no one was killed in this crime spree," First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd said. The mandatory minimum sentenced for this crime means this 27-year sentence is required and appropriate for this dangerous, violent conduct."
