Woman tells 911 she was trapped in car off Chuckanut Drive for 3 days
A 60-year-old woman was trapped in her car for three days after accidentally driving over a ledge on Chuckanut Drive in Skagit County, according to a copy of the 911 call obtained by The Seattle Times.
According to the copy of the call, the woman contacted 911 to ask for medical aid Saturday around 8:30 a.m. and told dispatch she drove over the side of the road accidentally after looking at her phone.
Her car was about 40 yards down an embankment four miles north of Bow, said Washington State Patrol trooper Kelsey Harding. Mountains border Chuckanut Drive, or Highway 11, on one side, and slope down to Samish and Bellingham Bays on the other.
The woman told dispatch that she had been in the car since Wednesday. The dispatch officer asked why she didn't call until Saturday, and the woman said she couldn't get her phone to work.
First responders traced the woman to the location of her call.
While they rescued the woman from her car and pulled it out of the embankment, traffic on Chuckanut Drive was stopped in both directions for two hours, Harding said.
The woman was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon with injuries related to her crash as well as to the amount of time she had been trapped in the vehicle, Harding said.
The woman told dispatch she was dehydrated.
The extent of her injuries is unknown.
