Longview experienced 16 fireworks-related fires and injuries in the past five years, the Longview Fire Department reported.

The fire department advises people to only use legal fireworks purchased locally at licensed sales locations.

Fireworks should only be used outside in clear areas away from buildings, vehicles and dry vegetation. They should be placed on a hard, level surface and not held or thrown.

People should not attempt to relight dud fireworks. Instead, wait 20 minutes and then place it in a bucket of water to cool.

When using fireworks, people should keep pets indoors to prevent them from running away and make sure to have a source of water nearby.

Used fireworks should be soaked in water overnight to ensure they are completely cold before placing them in the trash.
