Camp Kirby participants receive laptops

One hundred refurbished laptops went to students in need in Whatcom and Skagit counties last week thanks to AT&T and Camp Fire.

AT&T and Camp Fire provided Camp Fire Samish with laptops for students at Camp Kirby's Overnight Camp, Day Camp and Youth Leadership program.

The effort was part of Camp Fire's Absolutely Incredible Kid Day Campaign, a national movement encouraging adults to tell a young person in their lives how incredible they are. Absolutely Incredible Kid Day is celebrated each year on the third Thursday in March.

"At Camp Fire Samish, we help young people connect to the outdoors, to others, and to themselves - and this partnership with AT&T extends that connection in a meaningful, practical way," Camp Fire Samish Executive Director Marcus Roskamp said in a news release.

"For our campers, these laptops will help remove barriers to schoolwork, open doors to interests like coding, robotics and creative exploration, and keep them connected to friends, family and supportive communities long after they leave Camp Kirby."

The effort is part of AT&T's goal to address the digital divide, the gaps in who can access technology and digital literacy training. AT&T aims to bridge that gap by improving internet accessibility and affordability.

AT&T is putting $5 billion toward helping 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030, which has included distributing about 2,500 computers to students and their families across Washington since 2021.

AT&T plans to distribute 30,000 laptops nationwide in 2026.
