Area teachers receive grants to enhance instruction

Three teachers in the Mount Vernon and Burlington-Edison school districts received Ellison Foundation grants to enhance classroom instruction.

The Ellison Foundation provides grants to improve education, healthcare and lifelong achievement.

Lizbeth Davis at Madison Elementary School in Mount Vernon is set to receive $2,800, which she said she will use it to buy light tables for the Transition to Kindergarten classrooms. Light tables are lit from below so children can learn about color mixing, light and shadows.

Davis said she also wants to purchase items to use on the light tables, including transparent letters, numbers, 3D and 2D shapes, sorting beads and sorting trays.

Lorlei Medina and her partner teacher Miguel Rivas at Allen Elementary in Bow will put their $2,000 grant toward acquiring and using the bilingual online reading program Read Live.

Medina said she and Rivas will use the program to help improve Spanish and English fluency at the fifth-grade level.
