Skagit County cuts nine positions through voluntary resignation incentive program

Nine Skagit County employees have taken part in a voluntary resignation incentive program the county launched Jan. 12 as a way to save money during a time of budget cuts.

County employees had until the end of February to apply for the program, which provides them with a lump sum of $1,000 per year of service up to $25,000.

Employees were only approved for the program if their departure will save the county money through elimination of the position.

The nine positions include an appraiser, community health worker, senior planner, human resources assistant, public health accounting tech and four positions in the Department of Central Services, which provides records management and mapping services for the county.

The four positions in Central Services include an assistant director, systems analyst, senior systems administrator and senior systems engineer.

The county did not have a goal for how many positions it wanted to cut through the program, said county spokesperson Jenn Rogers.

Three of the nine employees have already left their jobs. Another four will leave by the end of June, and the other two by October.

The county is estimating that the elimination of the positions will save it $550,000 in 2026, with additional savings in future years when the positions will remain unfilled for the entire 12 months.

The nine departures will bring the county to 658 employees.
