Sedro-Woolley School District begins summer projects

SEDRO-WOOLLEY - The Sedro-Woolley School District will start 12 improvement projects this summer that are being funded by a voter-approved capital levy.

The projects will promote safe, secure and functional learning environments for students and staff.

This summer's elementary school projects include a gate installation, and camera relocation and additions at Clear Lake Elementary, plumbing improvements and a fence extension at Evergreen Elementary, fence replacement at Mary Purcell Elementary and covered courtyard construction, camera relocation and exterior painting at Samish Elementary.

The largest project is the replacement of about 87,000 square feet of roofing at Sedro-Woolley High School. The existing roof is about 30 years old and has required ongoing repairs to address leaks throughout the building.

Maintenance staff have spent about 100 hours this year responding to and repairing leaks.

The roof repair is a $1.2 million project being completed by Garland and Hytech Roofing. The new roof is expected to reduce maintenance demands and protect classrooms, equipment and instructional spaces from water damage.

"Replacing the high school roof is a significant investment that will protect one of our community's most important assets for years to come," incoming Superintendent Brett Greenwood said in a news release.

Work was set to begin Monday and is expected to continue through early August, weather permitting.

Other projects at Sedro-Woolley High School include a turf and track surface replacement, server replacement and an auto shop garage door replacement.

"We are grateful to our community for supporting the capital levy, which allows us to make important investments in our facilities," Greenwood said.

Community members living near schools may notice construction equipment, delivery vehicles, increased activity and more noisy periods this summer.

"School buildings belong to the community and we are engaging in repairs to ensure they are here for the next generation," Greenwood said.

Throughout the summer, the district will share updates and photos about the progress of the projects. Most projects are scheduled to be completed before students return in the fall.
