Section of Skagit River opening to sockeye fishing

A portion of the Skagit River will be open to fishing for sockeye salmon Tuesday through July 31.

According to a news release from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Skagit River will be open from the Division Street Bridge in Mount Vernon to the Dalles Bridge in Concrete.

The fishery will be open seven days a week; however, though there will be periodic closures to prevent conflicts during tribal fisheries. The closures will be announced as soon as possible.

The first expected closure will be from Gilligan Creek to Dalles Bridge on June 25–26.

The fishery was set because harvestable numbers of sockeye salmon are forecast to return to the Baker River system.

The daily limit on the Skagit River is four sockeye with a minimum size of 12 inches.

All salmon other than sockeye must be released. Anglers must have a license appropriate to the fishery.

The Baker Lake sockeye season is tentatively set for July 11 through Aug. 31.

Anglers are asked to cooperate with creel personnel collecting catch information.

According to the release, monitoring and evaluation of fisheries is an important part of ensuring conservation goals are met.

Anglers to sign up for Fishing Rule Change email notifications at wdfw.wa.gov and to check for emergency rules prior to fishing.
