Advisory issued for Bay View State Park due to high bacteria levels

BAY VIEW STATE PARK - The public should avoid contact with the water at Bay View State Park due to high bacteria levels.

The state Department of Ecology's BEACH program issued Thursday a no-contact warning for Bay View State Park after testing of the water showed high levels of bacteria.

The department is advising that the public refrain from coming into contact with the water, including through activities such as swimming, diving, wading, beachcombing, kayaking and paddle boarding.

Those who come in contact with the water can develop gastroenteritis, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses, with children and the immunocompromised most at risk.

Beach visitors can also protect themselves by washing their hands prior to eating, showering after swimming, and not swallowing beach water.

The department has posted signs at public access points.
