National Weather Service issues 'extreme heat watch' for Clark County this weekend

One week ahead of the technical start of summer on June 21, weather forecasters are predicting potentially dangerous heat this weekend and early next week in Clark County.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service announced an "extreme heat watch" will be in effect from 11 a.m. Sunday through 11 p.m. Monday. Daytime temperatures may reach 100 degrees during that time.

The hot weekend will cap off temperatures that are expected to rise throughout this week. Friday's daytime high temperature may hit the low 80s, and Saturday's may reach 90. After that, daytime temperatures stay high, and overnight lows will be in the mid 60s.

By Sunday and Monday, the National Weather Service said "dangerously hot conditions" are possible. Heat-related illnesses may increase significantly during such an event.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in a cool place during the heat of the day, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors," says the National Weather Service statement. "For those without air conditioning, use fans to keep air moving. Keeps windows closed during the day and open at night, unless air quality is degraded."

The Weather Service also reminded everyone not to leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

The extreme heat watch applies to the Portland metro area, from Stevenson and Oregon's Multnomah Falls to the east to Hillsboro, Ore., and Forest Grove, Ore., to the west.
