Mount Vernon School Board member resigns
MOUNT VERNON - Mount Vernon School Board member Laura Cailloux announced Wednesday that she will resign her position effective July 16.
Cailloux has been involved with the district for 20 years. On the School Board, she represents District 1, which consists of West Mount Vernon.
Cailloux joined the board in 2006 and served until 2011 when she took a break to earn a doctorate in educational leadership.
She was elected to the board in 2019.
"I came back because I believe so strongly in the community that is Mount Vernon and the Mount Vernon School District," Cailloux said in Wednesday's board meeting.
In a letter she read at the meeting, she said she joined the board to promote a welcoming environment for Latino community members.
"Over the past 20 years I've seen remarkable work happen in the Mount Vernon School District to really make it an inclusive place for all the members of our community," Cailloux said.
According to a School Board news release, Cailloux had an unwavering commitment to the district and its students, staff and community.
Superintendent Victor Vergara said in a news release that Cailloux has been an advocate for educational equity and expanded opportunities for all students and staff.
Vergara said Cailloux's leadership, dedication and compassion have contributed to improvements throughout the district.
Those wishing to fill the open seat can apply through 4:30 p.m. Friday. The new board member is scheduled to take office Aug. 5.
