Burlington Lawn Mower Races bring racers from throughout Western Washington

BURLINGTON - Dirt flew as engines revved Saturday during the Burlington Lawn Mower Races at the Rotary Park Dirt Track in Burlington.

Saturday marked the fourth year of the one-day event hosted by Burlington Parks & Recreation. In past years, the event coincided with Berry Dairy Days, but this year it took place two weekends before the festival.

The event drew 21 racers from throughout Western Washington - and one from New Mexico - all competing for trophies and bragging rights.

Of the 22 racers, four competed in a women's division that was offered for the first time.

For safety, the mowers' blades are removed before racing. Engines are also built to be faster than those on average mowers.

Some racers drove quickly, while others took a slow, steady approach. However, every race saw at least one vehicle stall or crash.

The audience, seated or standing at a safe distance from the track, took video and cheered throughout. Audience members included a wide age range, but everyone was captivated by the action.

Along with watching the races, audience members visited food trucks from Wingz & Thingz and the Caffeine & Carb Junkies, and the sponsor tents for other fun activities.
