Man accused in Walla Walla shooting released while prosecutor considers charges

An Oregon man accused of shooting a man in Walla Walla early in the morning of May 25 was released from jail while prosecutors decide whether to charge him.

The 21-year-old Milton-Freewater man was originally arrested after allegedly shooting the 30-year-old victim in the 1500 block of West Rose Street.

According to the Walla Walla County Jail Roster, the man was released from jail on May 28. According to the roster, the man posted bail.

On Wednesday, June 3, Walla Walla County prosecuting Attorney Gabe Acosta said his office is still making its charging decision.

He said the office is "awaiting completion of the investigation, or at least the majority of it."

According to Washington law, defendants must be charged or released after three days from their initial arrest. Acosta confirmed that any bail the man may have paid would have been returned to him since the deadline passed.

According to an online Washington court portal, the man does not have a criminal history in the state.

According to a Walla Walla Police Department release, police think an altercation occurred between the suspect and the victim in the parking lot of a business that had closed for the day. Several people were present.

Police, citing video evidence and witness statements, said the altercation started verbally, turned physical and ended with someone firing one gunshot.

A second suspect, a 20-year-old Milton-Freewater woman, also was arrested under investigation of rendering criminal assistance.

She was released on May 26 on her own recognizance. Charges have not been filed yet in her case either.
