College Place field house nears completion
College Place School District's new field house is expected to be up and running by this fall, officials say, opening just in time for students to come back at the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
The field house, on the campus of College Place High School and Sager Middle School, 1755 S. College Ave., is under construction and expected to cost about $2.7 million.
It will feature flooring suitable for all sports including volleyball, basketball, wrestling, cheer and soccer. With an interior of about 10,000 square feet, the building will include two full-size basketball courts and will be big enough to support up to three volleyball games at the same time.
The facility also features a curtain that can divide the space down the middle so two different sporting events or practices can happen at the same time.
"So what this does, obviously it about doubles our gym space capacity and keeps us out of those early morning practices or those late nights that aren't good for kids and homework and things," Superintendent Jim Fry said.
Everything will be Americans with Disabilities Act accessible, with restrooms that can be reached from inside and outside. The facility is also heated and air-conditioned.
"For all of our athletes - and we always risk heat and smoke in the fall - this is going to be a safe place that we can come in and still have practices when otherwise we wouldn't," Fry said.
The district plans to have a ribbon cutting for the completed field house in August. In the middle of the indoor court, Fry said, will be a large CP stamp.
"We're not using CPHS or SMS because this is not just for the high school, it's for all of CP, and that expands beyond our schools," Fry said. "So when we say CP, it means us here, but it also means ‘us' broader."
