Award honors Anacortes bus driver, science teacher with $5,000 grants

An Anacortes bus driver and science teacher will each receive $5,000 grants as winners of the Anacortes School District's second annual Champions in Education Award.

Gail LeBoutillier, a Guemes Island resident who has worked as a bus driver in the district since 2018, plans to use the money for sensory items, art materials and positive-behavior supports for students on all bus routes.

"Her commitment to inclusion, kindness and responsiveness reflects a deep understanding that transportation is an important part of every student's school experience," Anacortes School District spokesperson Nicole Tesch said of LeBoutillier.

Theresa McCartney is a science teacher at Anacortes Middle School who plans to use the money for hands-on science materials, classroom engagement tools and student-centered enrichment opportunities, including supplies for the middle school's Fun Interest Groups (FIGs).

"Theresa is widely respected for creating inclusive, engaging and student-centered learning experiences," Tesch said.

LeBoutillier and McCartney were among 90 district employees who were nominated for this year's award and 34 who then submitted proposals for how they would use the money.

The award, which is funded through a district partnership with Barrett Financial, recognizes two employees each year - one certificated, such as teachers and counselors, and one classified, or non-union, such as paraeducators, coaches and custodians.

The award recognizes employees who go above and beyond to support students and strengthen school communities, according to the district.

Recipients are selected based on their impact on students, commitment to equity and inclusion, innovation, collaboration and professional growth, according to the district.

She has also secured grants to improve science instruction and student engagement, including funding for updated microscopes, accessibility supports and classroom tools that enhance hands-on learning opportunities, according to the district.
