Teen shot in Chelan, 14-year-old suspect identified by police
A 17-year-old male was shot in Chelan Friday night, and police say a 14-year-old is suspected in the shooting.
The Chelan County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunshots around 10:20 p.m. at the Riverwalk parking lot, 117 E. Wapato Ave. in Chelan, after a deputy near South Emerson Street and East Wapato Avenue heard multiple shots fired, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
Authorities set up a containment area around the Woodin Avenue bridge after nearby witnesses reported seeing a suspect flee on foot toward the bridge. They were then able to locate a 17-year-old male suffering from a lower back gunshot wound.
Deputies on the scene provided first-aid help until emergency personnel arrived. They were unable to locate the suspect, the release said.
After investigators collected witness statements and evidence from the scene, they were able to identify the shooter as a 14-year-old male from Chelan.
Deputies said they spoke with the suspect and his mother by phone on Saturday and arranged for the teen to turn himself in. He was later booked into the Chelan County Juvenile Justice Center on two counts of first-degree assault.
According to the release, the suspect does not attend schools in the Chelan or Manson school districts, and they have not received any information suggesting a threat to local schools.
