Skagit Transit receives $3.1 million in federal funds
The Skagit Transit Board of Directors voted unanimously Wednesday to accept about $3.1 million in Federal Transit Administration funds for the Mount Vernon-Burlington-Sedro-Woolley urbanized area.
The agency received the funding because the area is classified by the federal government as a small urbanized area. Such areas are eligible for the funding.
Eligibility for the funds is determined by population data from the 2020 census, as well as data from the National Transit Database.
Also during Wednesday's meeting, the board approved the purchase of 11 replacement vans using grant funds.
Vans are part of Skagit Transit's rideshare program, which allows groups of at least 3 adults to borrow a van for commuting.
The new vans are 2026 Chrysler Pacificas from the Dwayne Lane dealership in Everett and cost about $515,000 total.
About $450,000 will come from previously accepted grants, and the rest from from the Transit Support Grant Formula Funds Match.
Skagit Transit will not have to use its own money to purchase the vehicles.
Skagit Transit CEO Crystle Stidham said the agency's current vans have reached the end of their lifespans, and that the Federal Transit Administration requires they be removed within a year.
The Skagit Transit Board of Directors will hold its next meeting at 11 a.m. June 17 in the Burlington City Council Chambers and online via Teams. For more information, visit skagittransit.org.
