United Way of Skagit County calls for volunteers for flood cleanup

The United Way of Skagit County will hold a two-day service event June 27-28 to help the Cape Horn community clean up debris from flooding in December.

The United Way is inviting local groups, including social clubs, businesses, civic organizations and faith communities, to help on one of those dates.

In a Monday news release, United Way Community Resilience Director Chuck Messinger said, "The source of the debris is not our concern. What matters is the long-term environmental impact on the Skagit River and the well-being of those who live along it. Many property owners are still recovering from prior disasters and simply have not had the resources to take on another cleanup alone."

All registered volunteer teams will be entered into a drawing where the winning team will receive at least $5,000 to donate to a nonprofit of its choice.

"A weekend of service can create a lasting impact - for our neighbors, for our environment, and for the future of the Skagit," Messinger said. "This is an opportunity for our county to come together and show what it means to truly support one another. Let's unite for Skagit County."
