School resumes in Winlock following threat and closure

May 15-The Winlock School District reopened its schools Wednesday following a single-day closure and investigation into a reported threat directed at the middle and high schools.

"A law enforcement investigation has confirmed that the student whose name was associated with the account was not the individual who made the threat," the Winlock School District said in a Tuesday news release. "Law enforcement has identified the person responsible, and that individual is currently in custody."

The district said it appreciated the support of families, staff, students and the Winlock Police Department.

"Thank you again for your cooperation and understanding," the district said.

The district said it would need to schedule a "makeup instructional day" on Friday, May 22.

"Scheduling this make-up day allows us to fulfill the requirement without extending the school year beyond the current calendar," the district said.

The district first announced the reported threat on May 11.

"Winlock School District: We are aware of a threat directed at our middle and high schools and are working closely with local law enforcement to investigate," the district said around 7:10 p.m.

About an hour later, the district announced it would cancel school and all after-school activities for Tuesday, citing "an abundance of caution."

"The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority," the district said at the time.
