The netting is worn, so the contractor plans to remove it, clean the underside of the bridge, and install new netting.
Vehicles parked in the lot outside Kelso City Hall can get soiled, and some birds are also getting trapped in the damaged netting, according to a city report.
Work on South Pacific Avenue between Oak and Allen streets is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
That area will be closed, but detours will be in place, according to a city notice.
Kelso City Council unanimously approved paying the lowest bidder, Onalaska-based Raptor Excavating, $176,260 for the project at its April 7 meeting.
The only other bidder came in at $178,153.
The project is funded by the city street fund, according to the city report.
Kelso councilmember Keenan Harvey asked on April 7 whether the city has special insurance for the contractor to work over the river, but Community Development Director Mike Kardas clarified that work will only be done over land.
Councilmember Brian Wood also confirmed that the netting is primarily to protect the city parking area, not the bridge.
