Mount Vernon Bulldogs 2,
Lynnwood Royals 1
SHORELINE - The Bulldogs beat the Royals in a third-place game of the Northwest 3A District Tournament to earn a state tournament berth.
Elijah Natekin had both of Mount Vernon's goals.
"Elijah stepped up like a true captain and leader," Mount Vernon coach Behr Ibarra said. "I am very proud of him."
Both of Natekin's strikes were unassisted as he put the ball past Lynnwood's keeper on a penalty kick in the 15th minute and on a free kick from 25 yards out that ricochetted off the cross bar and into the goal in the 65th minute.
Natekin earned Dawg of the Match honors.
The Bulldogs had several other strong showings.
"Andrew Zuniga delivered one of his strongest performances of the season, while freshman Jose Castillo held his own against a physical opponent and showed maturity beyond his years," Ibarra said. "In the midfield, the young duo of Rio Ibarra and Santiago Camarena stood strong against a tough Lynnwood side. Despite constant physical pressure, they remained composed and rose to the challenge.
"Zikaya Morrison also put in a great shift and helped us lock down the midfield."
Overall, Ibarra was pleased with the effort he saw from a squad that relied heavily on its depth.
"It was a resilient performance marked by character and competitive grit," he said. "With the victory, the Bulldogs clinch a berth in the state tournament after missing qualification last season."
Mount Vernon is 15-2-1 and ranked No. 7 in Class 3A state RPI.
It will open the state tournament Tuesday or Wednesday.
