Registration opens for the Lewis County Historical Ride

May 13-Registration is open for cyclists wanting to take part in Lewis County's longest-running bicycling event this Saturday.

The Lewis County Historical Ride takes place at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, and starts at Stan Hedwall Park in Chehalis.

Hosted by Scouting America Crew 333, the ride is in its 43rd year and offers a variety of routes from 10 to 100 miles for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Routes pass by several sites important to the history of Lewis County and Washington, such as the Jackson House, Cowlitz Mission, Evaline School and Claquato Church. Waypoints to each historic site are included for riders wishing to download routes to GPS units, a news release from Scouting America Crew 333 stated.

Amenities for riders include rest stops with food and refreshments, as well as support from Lewis County amateur radio volunteers.

The event is a great training ride for those wishing to participate in the annual Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic in June, according to the release. That ride passes through Lewis County, with Centralia hosting the midpoint.

Drivers along the route are urged to share the road and watch for cyclists on local roads, especially Jackson Highway, Winlock-Vader Road, Scheuber Road and city streets in Chehalis's Historic Westside Neighborhood.

To sign up online, go to eventbrite.com and search Lewis County Historic Bike Ride. Cost for the ride ranges from $35 to $70 depending on choice of route. Online sales end Friday, but cash-only day of ride registration will be available.
