Battle Ground's Lewisville Regional Park reopens after picnic shelter fire
May 13-Lewisville Regional Park in Battle Ground reopened to the public Wednesday, just a day after a fire destroyed the central picnic shelter at the park.
Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue was called to the park about 1 a.m. Tuesday to find the picnic shelter fully engulfed in flames. Clark County fire districts 3 and 10 responded to help douse the flames.
The Clark County Sheriff's Office, which also responded to the fire, said the shelter was a complete loss. The agency, along with the Clark County Fire Marshal's Office, is investigating the fire as possible arson.
No injuries were reported.
The park remained closed Tuesday during the investigation and preliminary cleanup.
Staff are contacting picnic shelter reservation holders to offer refunds and options for moving their reservations to other locations.
A fence and signage have been installed around the closed area. Visitors are reminded that entering areas closed to the public is prohibited.
The picnic shelter was constructed sometime between 1936 and 1940 under the Works Progress Administration. It was one of the original six structures. The park is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Clark County Heritage Register.
