Monday's Prep Roundup: Burlington-Edison softball team rolls into district title game
LYNDEN - The Burlington-Edison High School softball team beat Anacortes 11-1 on Monday in a five-inning semifinal-round game of the Northwest 2A District Tournament.
The win gave the Tigers (17-3) a berth in the Class 2A State Tournament. It is their first state berth in 16 years.
They will face Lynden at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bender Fields in Lynden for the district tournament title.
The Tigers had a bye in the quarterfinal round of the district tournament. They then rode the pitching of Katelyn Billings to beat Anacortes.
"Katelyn Billings pitched a great game," Burlington-Edison coach Jessica Fleury said.
In the 15 outs the Tigers secured against Anacortes, 14 came by way of strikeout. Billings allowed one run and two hits.
Burlington-Edison's Stella Kowalski was 3-for-4 with three RBI, Abby Herrgesell 2-for-3 with one RBI, Peyton Locke 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI, and Zoe Zimmerman 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Seahawks (10-11) face Lakewood at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Bender Fields in a tournament loser-out game.
They beat Sehome 18-1 in their tournament opener.

ANACORTES - The Seahawks beat the Tigers in a loser-out game of the Northwest 2A District Tournament.
Anacortes (16-7) will host Archbishop Murphy at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the tournament's third-place game.
Against Burlington-Edison, the Seahawks scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run Wes Green home run.
In the second inning, the Seahawks extended their lead to 3-0 when Lucas Cooper's double down the left-field line scored a run.
Burlington-Edison score two runs in the third inning on an Asher Moe double and a Garrett Dehon single, then tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Moe.
Moe went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBI.
The Seahawks scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning scored with two outs and both on errors.
Skylar Dahlin earned the pitching win for Anacortes, allowing one hit and no runs over three innings of relief.
Burlington-Edison finishes its season 17-6.
Girls' Tennis
Northwest 2A District Tournament
BELLINGHAM - The Anacortes doubles team of Carter Bowman and Claire Dekker finished fourth in the tournament.
The pair of Seahawks won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 before falling in the third-place match 6-2, 6-1.
Burlington-Edison's Hazel Cosgrove and Macy Hendrickson were eliminated 6-3, 7-5.
Girls' Golf
Northwest 3A District Tournament
EVERETT - Mount Vernon's Livi Burton sits in 12th place after the first day of the tournament.
The senior had a round of 88. Teammate Abigail Adams is in 21st place after a round of 94.
Sedro-Woolley's top two golfers after the first round were Cadence Natoli (15th with a 90) and Taryn Torgerson (23rd with a 96).
The tournament continues Tuesday.
Northwest 2A District Tournament
BELLINGHAM - Burlington-Edison had five of the top seven golfers after the first day of the tournament.
Anna Horton sits second, Caity Horton third, Kylee Vanderark fourth, Morgan Perry in a tie for fifth, and Hanna Biringer seventh.
The tournament continues Tuesday.
Boys' Golf
Northwest 2A District Tournament
Burlington-Edison's Wyatt Brownell and Anacortes' Vance Frerichs each shot 73 to tie for the lead on the first day of the tournament at Avalon Golf Links.
Burlington-Edison's Hanstead Cruz shot 83 and sits in third, while teammate Logan Arendse is tied for fourth at 85 and Cael Hamilton is tied for eighth at 85.
Anacortes' Dex Hong is tied for eighth at 85, and Sledge Martinez is 13th at 89.
The tournament continues Tuesday.
