Christopher M. Schamp, 34, was transported to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.

Schamp was headed south in a 2026 Toyota Scion around 5 a.m. near Kelso at milepost 38 when he tried to pass Kalvan L. Smith, 42, of Spanway, in a semi, but struck the vehicle's trailer instead, the memo states.

Smith was not injured.

Neither drugs nor alcohol was involved in the crash.

The memo states unsafe passing caused the wreck.
