Judge sets bail at $30,000 for Vancouver man accused of shooting at houses in Mount Vista neighborhood

May 4-A judge on Monday ordered a Vancouver man be held on $30,000 bail after he allegedly fired a handgun in a Mount Vista neighborhood, striking four homes, and set grass on fire.

Cyree Phillips, 30, appeared in Clark County Superior Court on allegations of first-degree attempted burglary, first-degree arson, reckless endangerment, third-degree malicious mischief and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Judge Robert Lewis ordered enhanced supervised release for Phillips if he posts bail. He noted Phillips has minimal criminal history, including third-degree theft and fourth-degree assault convictions from 2020.

Phillips is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

Phillips was arrested Sunday morning following a 911 call from a resident reporting the sound of gunfire and a man trying to enter his residence. The caller told the operator in Spanish that he ran upstairs with his wife for safety but came back down to secure the dead bolt, according to court records.

Several Clark County sheriff's deputies arrived. Deputies found Phillips in the backyard of the caller's home and ordered him to drop what he was holding, later determined to be a handgun, court records state.

Phillips reportedly told the arresting deputy he went to his brother's house in that neighborhood after seeing three men with assault rifles outside. He said when he told his brother about the men, an argument ensued, according to court records.

The deputy wrote in court records that Phillips' story was hard to follow. He asked Phillips if he had a gun in his hand at any point, and Phillips paused before saying he wanted an attorney.

Deputies found a lighter on the ground near Phillips' shoes, along with a handgun. They also found lighter fluid next to a fresh burned patch of grass, according to court records. The deputy wrote the fire started roughly 2 feet away from a residence, which could have caught fire.

One neighbor reported that a round went through a window of their home while they were inside. Another also reported a bullet going through their home. Deputies said in total, four homes were struck, according to court records.
