Friday's Prep Roundup: Anacortes wins county track and field titles

LA CONNER - The Anacortes High School track and field teams won the team titles Friday at the 118th Skagit County Track and Field Championships.

The Seahawks finished ahead of runner-up Burlington-Edison in the boys' meet and ahead of runner-up Sedro-Woolley in the girls' meet.

One meet record fell on the final day of the three-day meet.

Anacortes senior Maverick Ball ran the boys' 800-meter run in 1 minute, 53.01 seconds to better the 2024 meet record of 1:54.96 set by Mount Vernon's Nicholas Hoyer.

Several athletes won multiple events Friday.

Sedro-Woolley senior Lyla Self swept the girls' sprints, winning the 100 in 12.60 seconds, the 200 in 26.69 and the 400 in 1:00.41.

Mount Vernon's Mia Checketts won the girls' 800 (2:24.32) and 3,200 (11:24.64); Anacortes' Teagan Littke won the girls' high jump (5 feet, 0 inches) and triple jump (33-1); Burlington-Edison's Evan Fortun won the boys' 100 (11.14) and 200 (22.73); and Sedro-Woolley's Ethan DeJong won the boys' 110 hurdles (14.91) and 300 hurdles (40.02).

Like Self, Checketts won three events in the meet. She also won the girls' 1,600 on Wednesday.

Anacortes' Dylan Rowell, who won the boys' 1,600 on Wednesday, won the 3,200 on Friday (9:46.90).

Softball

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 1,

Burlington-Edison Tigers 0

SEDRO-WOOLLEY - The Cubs scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the Northwest Conference game.

Reagan Evans led off the seventh inning with a double.

After Kasandra Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to advance Evans to third base, Peyton Brownfield hit a sacrifice fly to score Evans.

Gonzalez earned the pitching win for the Cubs.

She surrendered one hit over seven innings, walking none and striking out a school-record 19.

Burlington-Edison pitcher Katelyn Billings allowed three hits and had 10 strikeouts.

"These girls played so hard and I am so proud of how hard they competed against a great team," Burlington-Edison coach Jessica Fleury said.

Sedro-Woolley is 12-0 in conference and 17-2 overall, while Burlington-Edison is 12-1 in conference and 14-3 overall.

Sedro-Woolley is No. 2 in Class 3A state RPI, and Burlington-Edison No. 5 in Class 2A state RPI.

Blaine Borderites 8,

Anacortes Seahawks 5

BLAINE - The Borderites beat the Seahawks in a Northwest Conference game.

Blaine led 8-0 in the first inning, then Anacortes scored its five runs in the fourth inning.

Anacortes' Cora Myers was 4-for-4 with a run scored, and Gwen Andrew 3-for-3 with a double, walk, run scored and RBI.

Seahawks pitcher Evie Hanes pitched 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. She allowed four hits, one walk and struck out seven.

Anacortes is 6-7 in conference and 9-9 overall.

Nooksack Valley Pioneers 21,

Mount Vernon Bulldogs 2

EVERSON - The Pioneers beat the Bulldogs in a Northwest Conference game.

Mount Vernon is 2-9 in conference and 2-10 overall.

La Conner Braves 7-13,

Tonasket Tigers 16-3

TONASKET - The Braves and Tigers split a nonleague doubleheader.

La Conner is 6-7.

Baseball

Mount Vernon Bulldogs 9,

Ferndale Golden Eagles 4

FERNDALE - The Bulldogs finished their regular season with a Northwest Conference win over the Golden Eagles.

With the game tied 3-3 through five innings, Mount Vernon took a lead in the sixth on a three-run home run by Baird Brewer.

Bodey Jacobs and Reece Roberts each had three hits, and Nolan Bistranin had two hits. Roberts also had two walks.

Bulldogs pitcher Connor Swanson allowed four runs - one earned - in seven innings, giving up six hits, no walks and striking out six.

Mount Vernon finishes its regular season 15-0 in conference and 19-1 overall.

The Bulldogs, No. 1 in Class 3A state RPI, have won 18 consecutive games.

They will begin the Northwest 3A District Tournament on May 9.

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 8,

Marysville-Getchell Chargers 2

SEDRO-WOOLLEY - The Cubs beat the Chargers in a nonconference game.

Sedro-Woolley is 14-7 headed into the Northwest 3A District Tournament. They will host a game at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Girls' Tennis

Bellingham Bayhawks 7,

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 0

SEDRO-WOOLLEY - The Cubs were no match for the Bayhawks in the Northwest Conference match.

The Sedro-Woolley doubles team of Chloe Larsen and Akira Spagnolo took their Bellingham opponents to three sets.

Mount Vernon Bulldogs 4,

Blaine Borderites 3

BLAINE - The Bulldogs beat the Borderites in a Northwest Conference match.

Mount Vernon had singles wins from Farah Briseno (6-4, 4-6, 6-2), Aria Guerrero (6-4, 6-1) and Harper DeFrancisco (3-6, 6-1 6-4).

The Bulldogs doubles team of Leah Engeda and Emily Herrera-Martinez won 6-2, 7-5.

Sehome Mariners 6,

Anacortes Seahawks 1

BELLINGHAM - The Seahawks fell to the Mariners in a Northwest Conference match.

Anacortes' win came from Esther Jeong at No. 3 singles. The sophomore won 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11).

Squalicum Storm 6,

Burlington-Edison Tigers 1

BURLINGTON - The Tigers fell to the Storm in a Northwest Conference match.

Burlington-Edison's lone win came at No. 3 singles, where Macy Hendrickson beat Brianna Nguyen 6-3, 7-5.

Hendrickson, who typically plays No. 1 doubles with Hazel Cosgrove, was playing singles for the first time in her high school career.

"In the second set, Brianna battled back 5-4 and Macy, ignoring the heat and fatigue, took it one point at a time to win 7-5. It was amazing to watch," Burlington-Edison coach Chris Cammock said.
