Spring shopping event brings confidence and smiles to local foster youth
May 2-HUDSON'S BAY - In April, the Assistance League of Southwest Washington hosted its third annual spring shopping event, serving 80 children and teens in foster care, ages 10 to 19, through its JUST because and Fostering Independence programs.
Held over three days at the Fred Meyer Grand Central location, each child received $170 to spend on clothing and shoes.
Children participating in the program are referred by their social workers and attend alongside their foster parents.
A dedicated team of 20 ALSW volunteers assisted youth throughout their shopping experience. As is tradition, several members sewed handled bags for each child to take home with their purchases.
This spring initiative complements ALSW's annual back-to-school shopping event in August.
The event is made possible through the ongoing partnership with Fred Meyer and its dedicated staff, who volunteer their time to support ALSW's mission.
