Thursday's Prep Roundup: Bulldogs baseball bites Blaine

MOUNT VERNON - The Mount Vernon High School baseball team shut out Blaine 10-0 Thursday in a Northwest Conference game.

The Bulldogs blew the game open with six runs in the fifth inning as Brady Peterson laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run.

Kaiden Anderson grounded out, scoring one run; an error scored one run, Reece Roberts doubled, scoring one run, Baird Brewer singled, scoring one run, and Gunnar Rindal drew a walk, scoring one run.

Brewer and Roberts finished the game with a pair of hits apiece, with Roberts adding two RBI.

Brady Collins stepped on the hill first for Mount Vernon and didn't allow a hit or run over three innings while striking out four and walking one.

Brett Hanseth tossed two innings of no-run ball for the Bulldogs in relief, allowing one hit, while striking out two and walking none.

Mount Vernon is 14-0 in conference and 18-1 overall. They are No. 1 in Class 3A state RPI.

Burlington-Edison Tigers 3,

Squalicum Storm 0

BELLINGHAM - The Northwest Conference game was scoreless until the 11th inning, when the Tigers scored three runs to earn the victory.

Burlington-Edison got on the board in the top of the eleventh inning after Cash Cullop singled, scoring one run, and Hudson Baker doubled, scoring two runs.

Baker finished the game 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, Wyatt Jacobs was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Cullop was 1-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Asher Moe got the start for the Tigers and allowed five hits and no runs over 10 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Ethan Schmitz came on in relief to earn the save.

The Tigers are 10-4 in conference and 15-4 overall.

Mount Vernon Christian Hurricanes 17,

Granite Falls Tigers 1

GRANITE FALLS - The Hurricanes were dominant in claiming a nonconference victory over the Tigers.

Josh Feddema was 2-for-4 from the plate for Mount Vernon Christian with a run scored, while Chase Woodmansee was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, and Bennett Davis was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Pitcher Josh Feddema allowed one hit, no runs, struck out four and walked one in four innings of work for the Hurricanes.

Mount Vernon Christian is 16-3 overall.

LAKEWOOD - The Cougars got the best of the Cubs in the Northwest Conference game.

Sedro-Woolley is 8-7 in conference and 13-7 overall.

ANACORTES - The Seahawks edged the Wildcats in the Northwest Conference game.

Anacortes is 11-4 in conference and 14-6 overall.

La Conner Braves 3

DARRINGTON - The Loggers were a run better than the Braves in the Northwest 2B/1B League game.

La Conner is 3-6 in league and 4-10 overall.

Burlington-Edison Tigers 13,

Nooksack Valley Pioneers 1

BURLINGTON - The Tigers cruised past the Pioneers in the Northwest Conference game to notch their 11th straight victory.

Stella Kowalski went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Burlington-Edison, while Abby Herrgesell was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Lauren Jaderlund was 2-for-3 with four RBI.

"Zoe Zimmerman did a great job allowing three hits and having three strikeouts in five innings," Burlington-Edison coach Jessica Fleury said.

Burlington-Edison is 11-0 in conference and 16-2 overall. They are No. 4 in Class 2A state RPI.

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 16,

Mount Baker Mountaineers 2

DEMING - The Cubs cruised past the Mountaineers in the Northwest Conference game to win.

The winner of 13 straight games, Sedro-Woolley is 11-0 in conference and 16-2 overall. They are No. 4 in Class 3A state RPI.

Mount Vernon Bulldogs 5

MOUNT VERNON - The Bulldogs were defeated by the Borderites in the Northwest Conference game.

Mount Vernon is 2-8 in conference and 2-9 overall.

Anacortes Seahawks 0

ANACORTES - The Seahawks were shut out in a Northwest Conference game.

Anacortes is 6-6 in conference and 9-8 overall.

La Conner Braves 15,

Darrington Loggers 10

DARRINGTON - The Braves emerged victorious in the high-scoring Northwest 2B/1B League game.

La Conner is 3-5 in league and 5-6 overall.

BOYS' SOCCER

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 6,

Nooksack Valley Pioneers 6

EVERSON - The Cubs and Pioneers played to a high-scoring draw in the Northwest Conference match.

Wyatt Tyra scored four goals for Sedro-Woolley while Josue Lopez and Francisco Hernandez each scored once.

Sedro-Woolley is 3-7-5 in conference and 3-8-5 overall.

Burlington-Edison Tigers 1,

Lynden Christian Lyncs 1

BURLINGTON - The Tigers and Lyncs battled to a draw in the Northwest Conference match.

"Both teams played back-and-forth the entire game, creating chances at both ends," Burlington-Edison coach Ryan Kuttel said. "Ultimately, both goals came within about a minute of each other in the center of the first half."

Jesus Dorado Franco scored his 10th goal of the year for the Tigers off an assist from Leobardo Guerrero Tinoco.

The coach highlighted the play of Izaiah Gonzalez in goal, saying his keeper made a difficult save in the first half to deny the Lyncs a second goal. He was also impressed with the efforts of Taven Clancy, Roy Montiel, and Leobardo Guerrero Tinoco in the midfield.

"This was our senior night, so it was a great opportunity to honor our seniors with a hard-fought game and beautiful weather," Kuttel said. "Since spring break, we have only lost a single game, and the team has been playing high-quality soccer, which is great to see as we wrap up the regular season and head into the playoffs."

Burlington-Edison is 6-6-3 in conference and 6-7-3 overall.

ANACORTES - The Trojans kept the sheet clean against the Seahawks in a Northwest Conference match.

Anacortes is 4-11 in conference and 5-12 overall.

MOUNT VERNON - The Bulldogs won the Northwest Conference match by forfeit.

Mount Vernon is 13-1-1 in conference and 13-1-1 overall. They are No. 4 in Class 3A state RPI.

GIRLS' GOLF

Northwest Conference

OAK HARBOR - Burlington-Edison finished second in the eight-team tournament at Whidbey Golf Club, while Sedro-Woolley was third.

The Tigers had a five-golfer, 18-hole total of 458 while the Cubs finished with 535.

Burlington-Edison's Caity Horton placed sixth with a round of 86, while Anna Horton tied for fourth with a 89 and was followed by teammates Kyle Vander Ark (sixth at 90), Morgan Perry (tied for eighth with a 94) and Hanna Biringer (tied for 12th at 100).

Sedro-Woolley's Cadence Natoli finished 10th with a round of 95 to pace the Cubs, while Taryn Torgerson was 11th with 96, and Lexi Andreas tied for 12th with 100.

TRACK & FIELD

Skagit County Track and Field Championships

LA CONNER - Day two of the 118th Skagit County Track and Field Championships continued at La Conner High School with the finals in both the boys' and girls' pole vault events.

Sedro-Woolley's Jordan Janicki claimed the boys' pole vault title at 13-feet, 6 inches while Mount Vernon's Elijah Owens was second (13-0) and Burlington-Edison's Damon Lehman third (11-6).

In the girls' pole vault, La Conner's Maeve McCormick won at 10-6. Isabel Mejia of Burlington-Edison finished second (8-0) and Sedro-Woolley's Natalie Janicki was third (7-6).
