Skagit County, city of Mount Vernon to host event on senior services

Skagit County and the city of Mount Vernon will hold a public event at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, at the Mount Vernon Library Commons to discuss funding for senior services in the county.

The future of the Mount Vernon Senior Center facility and the county's senior meals program will also be discussed.

The Skagit Council on Aging is taking over the county's senior meals program starting July 1.

A panel featuring representatives from the Skagit County Board of Commissioners, the city of Mount Vernon, the Mount Vernon City Council, the Northwest Regional Council, and the Skagit Council on Aging will answer questions submitted by residents.

Residents must submit questions for the panel by 4 p.m. Friday, Apr. 24.

Residents can submit questions by emailing commissioners@co.skagit.wa.us or mvmayor@mountvernonwa.gov. Written comments can be dropped off at the Mount Vernon Senior Center.

Questions can only be submitted prior to the event. There will be no public comment period during the event.

The county operates senior centers in Burlington, Sedro-Woolley and Mount Vernon, and provides funding to the town of La Conner for senior services.

The Anacortes Senior Activity Center is operated by the city, but the county provides funding for staffing. The Concrete Community Center is operated by Community Action of Skagit County.

In February, the Skagit County Board of Commissioners held a work session to discuss future funding of senior services and senior centers in the county.

At the work session, county staff presented the commissioners with several funding options that the county could choose. Many of the options placed more financial and operational responsibility on the cities.

The option recommended at the work session by county staff would have the county providing each city with the funding for one senior center coordinator. The senior center coordinator would be responsible for the operations and management of the center.

The county commissioners took no action at the work session.

At the work session, county staff said that collaborating with city partners was one of the next steps to take while the county tries to identify a future funding model for senior services.
