Is Amazon really going to start showing tariff costs on your purchases?
President Donald Trump’s aggressive economic moves have left the U.S. in a trade war with China. The countries have imposed high tariffs on each other, which will likely ultimately hurt the wallets of consumers and businesses.
As Americans prepare to adapt to the changing economy, companies are implementing policies that get them through the transition.
Recently, rumors began circulating that Amazon, the massive e-commerce company based in Seattle, was listing tariff prices as a separate cost for purchases. Here’s what we know.
Does Amazon show tariff prices?
In short, no, Amazon has not and will not list import charges on products impacted by tariffs.
The concept gained public awareness after a story from Punchbowl News reported it as an upcoming change. The article claimed Amazon would “soon show” how much tariffs add to the final price, displayed right next to the total price. This information was attributed to “a person familiar with the plan.”
“The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products,” notes a statement from Amazon published on Tuesday, April 29. “This was never approved and is not going to happen.“
Amazon Haul is Amazon’s marketplace platform for low-priced fashion, home and lifestyle products.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the concept a “hostile and political act” during a press conference on Tuesday.
It was later reported that a conversation took place between President Trump and Jeff Bezos about the topic. Afterward Trump said the problem was “solved,” according to AP News.
