Firefighters rescue children from Olympia school bus stuck in flood waters Tuesday
Firefighters helped rescue students from a bus that got stuck in flood waters northwest of Black Lake Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred on Delphi Road Southwest between Cedar Flats Road and 32nd Avenue, according to a Facebook post from the McLane Black Lake Fire District.
Photos from the scene show an Olympia School District bus tipping forward into shallow floodwaters off the side of the roadway. Just ahead of the bus is a disabled vehicle that got stuck on the flooded roadway.
The post says the disabled vehicle got stuck after the driver attempted to drive through the water on the road. The school bus driver responded to the situation by attempting to turn the bus around, but it became stuck as well.
Firefighters helped children off the bus and carried them through water to a second school bus that was called in, according to the post. No one was injured in the incident.
“This is a good reminder to not attempt to drive through rising or moving water,” the fire district post says.
Heavy rain caused flooding across Thurston County into Wednesday and resulted in several road closures.
Thurston County had closed Delphi Road Southwest from 62nd Avenue to McKenzie Road and reopened it by about 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to the county’s Public Works department.
