Three cities in Washington — Seattle, Vancouver and Bellevue — rank among the most active in the nation, a study shows.

Cities were ranked by population size, according to the Chamber of Commerce’s recent study called, “The Most Physically Active Cities in the U.S.

The study used data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s PLACES.

Small cities had populations from 100,000–149,999; midsize had 150,000–349,999 people; and large cities had a population of 350,000 or more.

The most active places were calculated by the share of adults who “self-reported engaging in leisure-time physical activity such as running, calisthenics, golf, gardening, or walking for exercise,” the study says.

Seattle ranked No. 1 in the large city category; Vancouver ranked No. 10 in the midsize city section; and Bellevue landed No. 1 in the small city section.

Overall, the study found western states to have more active adults.

Southern states had the lowest levels of physical activity: Mississippi 61.2%, Oklahoma 65%, Kentucky 66.6% and Louisiana 67.5%.

The study says the difference in physical activity from each state has a correlation to income levels despite the most active states having more outdoor exercising options.

More physically active adults are found to have reduced blood pressure, improved mood and energy levels, and better sleep, the study says. Active adults also have a reduced chance of some cancers and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
