Most of the nation’s leading grocery sellers, including Publix, Walmart, Costco and Target, have been hit by another salmonella-related recall, this one of frozen pizza bread.

Champion Foods announced a recall of Motor City Pizza Co.’s 5 Cheese Bread sold in single boxes and two-packs, the latest recall rippling from California Dairies dry milk powder salmonella problems. Since early May, companies that used the dry milk powder in their food products have been yanking those products on the concern they might be contaminated with salmonella.

“The recalled milk powder was supplied to a third-party manufacturer that provides a seasoning blend used in our 5-cheese sauce blend,” Champion’s website said. “Routine testing conducted by the seasoning’s blend manufacturer prior to use in the production of the 5 Cheese Bread showed that the seasoning’s batches tested negative for salmonella; however, we are taking action out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our customers.”

What is salmonella?

Salmonella infects an estimated 1.35 million people in the United States each year, according to the CDC. Though it’s rarely fatal and most people get through the few days of symptoms without medical attention, salmonella is most dangerous to children under 5, senior citizens over 65 and people with damaged immune systems.

Salmonella usually brings fever, stomachaches and diarrhea. If the diarrhea gets bloody or lasts more than two days, see a doctor. That’s also the move if fever gets over 102 degrees. Keep the person suffering from salmonella hydrated. Also, clean and sanitize all surfaces that food with salmonella might have touched.
