Only one person has applied so far to serve the remaining two years of Pasco City Councilman Ruben Alvarado.

The deadline to submit an application for the vacancy is 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30.

Applicants must be adults and registered voters of District 2 in east Pasco.

The district covers most of the area east of Highway 395, south of “A” Street and east of Cedar Avenue.

Alvarado — who has served as a councilman since January 2018 — resigned so his family can move to Walla Walla, where he is the new regional director of Communities in Schools of the Blue Mountain Region.

He remains in office through Friday, Dec. 31.

After that, it will be up to the city council to appoint someone to serve the last two years of Alvarado’s term.

The council will set a date and time to interview applicants it is considering for appointment. Interviews will be done in open session during a regular or special meeting in January.

The new council member will face election in 2023 since municipal elections are held in odd calendar years.

Applicants are notified that applications and supporting documents for appointment are public records and subject to release, including to the media and members of the public.

Pasco’s last appointment was in 2016 following the sudden death of longtime Councilman Mike Garrison.

People with questions about the process or the responsibilities of a council member are encouraged to call the city manager’s office at 509-545-3404 or email culwella@pasco-wa.gov.
