Children encouraged to ‘Read Across America’

Some stats about children and reading:

Children who are read to frequently are more likely to be able to count to 20, write their own names, and read or pretend to read.

Yet, just over half of children ages 3 to 5 are read to daily by a family member. And children in families with incomes before the poverty line are even less likely to be read to.

Hence the creation of Read Across America, a day to encourage children to read and adults to read to them.

The National Education Association chose the birthday of “Dr. Seuss,” aka Theodor Seuss Geisel, as an ideal day for the event. That’s March 2.
