The Fourth of July has arrived, and whether you're looking to grab some last-minute refreshments and snacks for a gathering or grab a bite to eat, consumers will have plenty of shopping and dining options on Saturday.

Most national retailers, grocery stores and restaurant chains will be open on Independence Day, however banks and post offices will be closed. The stock market will also be closed on Friday, July 3, since the Fourth of July is a federal holiday and falls on a Saturday this year.

The origins of the Fourth of July date back to July 4, 1776, when the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence.

However, the annual observation only became a regular occurrence after the War of 1812, when events such as groundbreaking ceremonies for the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were scheduled to coincide with Fourth of July festivities, according to the Library of Congress. Congress passed a law making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.

Here's everything you need to know about what's open and closed on the Fourth of July. It's best to check with your local store or restaurant online before leaving home, as hours and closures can vary by location.

Are banks, post offices, UPS and FedEx open on July 4th? Will mail be delivered?

  • Independence Day is a USPS holiday, according to the agency's website, meaning mail will not be delivered and post offices will be closed for retail transactions on July 4. Post offices will, however, be open on Friday, July 3, and mail delivery will occur as normal.
  • UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will not be available on the Fourth of July. UPS Store locations may be closed, according the company's website, and FedEx Office hours will also be modified.
  • Since it is a federal holiday, most bank branches will be closed on July 4. Consumers should check with their local bank branch for specific holiday hours.

Is the stock market open on July 4th?

U.S. stock markets will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day, which falls on a Saturday this year.

The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will be closed Friday and reopen Monday, July 6. The U.S. bond market will also be closed on July 3 and will close early at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 2, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Are grocery stores open on July 4th?

Most grocery chains will be open on July 4, although some may have limited hours of operation.

Kroger says on its website that its stores will be open regular hours; however, pharmacy and clinic hours may vary. Other chains, such as Walmart, Publix, Food Lion, Whole Foods and Meijer, among others, have traditionally been open on the Fourth of July. Trader Joe's said on its website all stores will be closing at 5 p.m. local time on the holiday.

In terms of wholesale clubs, Sam's Club warehouses will open at 8 a.m. for Plus members and 9 a.m. for Club members, and will close at 8 p.m., according to the company's website. BJ's warehouses will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the Fourth of July, the company says on its website.

Costco warehouses will be closed on Independence Day, according to the company's website.

Most restaurant chains will remain open on July 4, including McDonald's, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin and Wendy's, among others.
