Philadelphia 250 parade cancelled due to extreme heat July 4th weekend

Dangerous, triple-digit heat is attacking the East Coast this holiday weekend, not only bringing sweltering temps but canceling events for America's semiquincentennial in Philadelphia.

The city's long-awaited Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade was cancelled due to the heat, an alert that came from the official Wawa Welcome America page just hours before the noon start time.

The parade was expected by officials to be the largest professionally produced 250th anniversary parade in the nation, with elements representing all 50 states and U.S. territories as well as all Miss America state and territory titleholders.

Fifty marching bands from across the country were scheduled to perform, as well as historic and cultural showcases, military installations and 19 different floats.

Prior to its cancellation, the parade route had been shortened as a heat mitigation effort.

This is not the first event in the city that has been altered due to the heat this week.

The FIFA Fan Festival in Lemon Hill Park has limited its viewing schedule as the heat wave continues to bring triple digit temperatures, and a number of July 4 events have been cancelled or moved in the city to fight the temps.

The Thursday evening concert featuring the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldier's Chorus was canceled due to the temperature as well, and the Philadelphia Celebration of Freedom Award Ceremony scheduled for July 4 has been moved indoors.

How hot is it in Philadelphia this weekend?

A Heat Health emergency from Philadelphia Public Health is still in effect today, July 3, and isn't scheduled to end until Sunday. Cooling sites and public resources can be found here.

High temperatures this weekend are expected to exceed the 100-degree mark, with even higher heat indexes.

According to the National Weather Service, the city will likely see a high of 104 degrees Friday, with a heat index as high as 111 degrees.

On July 4, the city is forecasted to see a high around 101 degrees with a heat index as high as 105 degrees.
