Buying a car over the Fourth of July? These warranties are the real fireworks.
With a holiday weekend around the corner, most people are thinking about watching fireworks or sitting out on the beach. But are the most savvy shoppers at the car dealership this Fourth of July?
Many automakers run deals over the holiday, meaning it could be a good time to buy a vehicle-and an auto warranty to go with it.
But there are still a few important considerations before you sign a deal and drive off the lot. Here's what you need to know about buying a car and extended warranty over Independence Day weekend.
Why Fourth of July is a smart time to buy a car
The Fourth of July could be a smart time to purchase a vehicle: "There are some real discounts available," says Jeff Bartlett, managing editor for cars at Consumer Reports. "Many dealerships are open and likely not busy, with sales staff wishing that they were instead at a BBQ and eager to make a sale."
Still, the fundamentals of buying a car don't change just because it's a holiday. "The best time to buy is when your need, budget and car inventory align," Bartlett says.
And in reality, "Most manufacturer incentives run the full month, not just the holiday weekend," says Matt Smith, head of content at CarGurus. So, you probably don't need to miss the family cookout in order to snag a good deal.
What to look for in a car warranty
When looking for a car warranty, look for clearly laid-out terms and a straightforward claims process:
- Read the contract before you buy: Review the terms of your warranty and review your contract at home if you need more time to decide. "If someone is pressuring you to buy immediately or won't let you review the contract first, that's a red flag," says Ashley NeSmith, founder of Ashley the Auto Advocate.
- Check what's actually covered: Look closely at exclusions, deductibles and coverage limits. Be wary of vague exclusion language. "Phrases like ‘wear and tear' or ‘lack of maintenance' are broad enough to deny almost any claim," Smith says.
- Understand how repairs and claims work: Check how claims get paid. Smith says avoid warranties where you have to pay for repairs and wait for reimbursement after. "Direct payment to the shop is what you want," he says. Also check that you can use your preferred repair shop, as some warranties have exclusions.
- Consider manufacturer coverage: Bartlett recommends purchasing extended warranties directly from automakers, rather than third-party providers. "Automaker programs are accepted at all dealerships for that brand," he says, making it easier to use.
Top car warranty providers to complement your purchase
Endurance, Premier Auto Protect, American Dream Auto Protect and CarShield are among our top picks for car warranties this Fourth of July. Here's what makes them stand out.
Endurance
Best for: Buyers looking for comprehensive, all-in-one plans
Endurance is a well-known industry name and offers plans covering all aspects of car ownership. For instance, in addition to covering repairs, Endurance plans come with perks like 24/7 roadside assistance, windshield repair, fob replacement and rental car reimbursement. Some plans also help cover routine maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations.
However, while Endurance does not have a mileage cap, your vehicle can't qualify for coverage if it's over 20 years old.

Premier Auto Protect
Best for: Shoppers wanting tailored protection
Premier Auto Protect has seven customizable plans to choose from, including plans specifically for electric vehicles and luxury cars. All plans also come with 24/7 roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement. In addition to flexible coverage options, Premier Auto Protect has 4.6 stars on TrustPilot based on over 1,700 reviews.
That said, most Premier Auto Protect Plans only cover vehicles up to eight years old or up to 100,000 miles. This is a lower threshold compared to other providers on our list.

American Dream Auto Protect
Best for: Used vehicle buyers or budget-conscious shoppers
American Dream Auto Protect offers three main plans, but you can also customize your coverage based on your car's make and mileage. Coverage is available for cars under 20 years old or with up to 200,000, making it a good option if you're buying a used car.
Plans start around $90 per month, but the company regularly offers discounts to new joiners, making it one of the more affordable options featured here.

CarShield
Best for: High-mileage drivers or long-term ownership

CarShield also has several plan tiers, with some starting around $90 a month.

How to bundle your car purchase with a warranty
If you know you want an extended warranty on your car purchase, you can ask your dealer to roll the price into your auto loan during financing. You can also negotiate the price of your warranty at this time.
If you plan to buy extended warranty coverage the same day you buy a vehicle, make sure to do your research beforehand. Compare several quotes from providers and read the full contract before signing to avoid hidden fees or exclusions.
And keep in mind, you don't necessarily need to choose a warranty right away. "You can buy an extended warranty any time before factory coverage expires, which means you don't have to decide when you're already tired from negotiating the car," Smith says.
