Maitland Mayor John Lowndes to run for Jason Brodeur's Florida Senate seat
ORLANDO, Fla. - Maitland Mayor and Democrat John Lowndes has filed to run for the Florida Senate in District 10, the seat currently held by Republican state Sen. Jason Brodeur.
The district covers all of Seminole County and portions of north Orange County, including Maitland and Winter Park.
As of Monday, the only other Democratic candidate in the race is Geneva resident H. Alexander Duncan, according to the state's Division of Elections website.
A Winter Park native and attorney, Lowndes has served as Maitland's mayor since April 2021 and has lived in the city for more than two decades. He also served on Maitland's planning and zoning commission and community redevelopment agency.
In a press release announcing his candidacy, Lowndes said his campaign will focus on "lowering costs for working families and seniors, protecting homeowners from predatory insurance corporations and bringing a more practical, solutions-oriented approach to Tallahassee."
Brodeur has served in the state Senate since 2020, when he was elected to the old District 9 seat. After redistricting, Brodeur was elected to his current district seat in 2022.
As of Friday, no other Republican has filed to run against the Sanford resident in the GOP primary.
The qualifying period for candidates begins June 8 and runs through June 12. Florida's primary election is Aug. 18.
