A man died on a trail in Utah’s Arches National Park as rangers and rescue personnel tried to save him, officials said.

National Park Service rangers rushed to where others were already giving the 56-year-old man CPR along the Devils Garden Trail on Sunday, March 12, according to a news release.

Resuscitation efforts failed, and the man was declared dead on the trail, the release said.

Devils Garden Trail is a popular scenic trail that “offers breathtaking views, camping, backpacking, stargazing, and hiking of all skill levels,” according to the National Park Service. That’s where hikers can go to see “arches, spires, and a large concentration of narrow rock walls called ‘fins’.”

There’s a number of distinct loops for hikers throughout Devils Garden of varying difficulty levels, the park service said. Round trip, the whole trail is just under 8 miles long and can get pretty strenuous along certain routes.

“The full Devils Garden Trail includes Landscape Arch, Double O Arch, Dark Angel, and the primitive trail,” the park service said. “This challenging hike involves narrow ledges, steep exposures, uneven surfaces, rock scrambling, and few trail markers.”

Officials recommend bringing at least 3 quarts of water per person, as well as a headlamp and a jacket in case the trip lasts until after dark.

The park service did not say where in Devils Garden the man was when he died.

Last month, a 71-year-old from Massachusetts collapsed and died while hiking with family in the park, McClatchy News previously reported.
