A beloved high school volleyball coach, guidance counselor and father of three was fatally hit by a car, New Jersey police say.

State troopers said William Scully was hit by a Nissan Altima after stopping and exiting his car on the right shoulder of Interstate 295 near Mount Laurel.

Troopers said the incident occurred just after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The 49-year-old from Stratford was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release from state police. The collision is under investigation.

Scully leaves behind his wife and three children, according to his obituary. He worked at Sterling High School as a guidance counselor, and he coached the school’s boys and girls volleyball teams.

At the time of the collision, the coach was driving home from a volleyball game in Princeton, a friend shared on Facebook.

“It was impossible to be in a bad mood while around him as he never failed to put a smile on our faces. You will forever and always be in our hearts,” the girl’s volleyball team wrote in a Nov. 16 Instagram post. “I hope we continue to make you proud.”

“UKnighted as a School Community,” the school’s principal said in a Tweet.

The school did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment on Nov. 17.

Other friends and colleagues shared memories of Scully on Facebook.

“He was always positive and enthusiastic, you never heard a negative word spoken from him, and he always greeted you with a ‘Hello bud, how’s the family?’” Deptford Soccer, a club Scully coached for, wrote in a post. “Words cannot describe the sadness we all feel over losing Coach Bill.”

“Today I am really hoping there is a heaven—this dude deserves admission, a front row seat, a fast pass to all the joys that heaven may offer,” John Hopely shared. “This one hurts—just not fair.”

Stratford is about 15 miles southeast of Philadelphia.
