6-year-old drowns when dad’s vehicle is swept into flooded water, Oklahoma officials say

A 6-year-old girl drowned and her father is missing after he drove into flooded water in Oklahoma, officials say.

It happened around 8:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, in Adair County, in northeast Oklahoma. The 43-year-old male driver came across a bridge with water over the road, and he attempted to cross it in his Subaru Forester, according to Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Officials said the Subaru, with the father and three children inside, was then swept into the water.

The 6-year-old girl, whose name has not been publicly disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 14-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl were treated and released from a hospital, highway patrol said.

The Highway 100 West Volunteer Fire Department said late Saturday the father was still missing, with more than a half-dozen agencies involved in the search.

All four people in the vehicle are from Jay, Oklahoma, a town of about 2,400 residents that is 60 miles north from where the incident occurred. Officials did not confirm if the passengers are part of the same family.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s emergency response team was traveling back to the area Monday to continue its search for the driver, a spokesperson said.
