A man accused of fatally shooting a woman in the head has been arrested after decades on the run, California police said.

Giovani Gonzalez stood on a sidewalk in Hollywood on Nov. 16, 1990, along with a woman and other people, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

He was accused of arguing with the woman, pointing a shotgun at her head and firing the gun, killing her instantly.

“After the murder, the suspect fled the country to Guatemala and went into hiding,” police said in a May 31 news release.

Police said Gonzalez initially lived with his mom in Guatemala. On Jan. 24, 1991, authorities signed an affidavit for international extradition.

“The suspect became aware that law enforcement was looking for him and fled his mother’s residence and went into hiding,” police said.

“With the passing of time and no new leads on the suspect’s whereabouts,” the provisional arrest warrant expired for the case, police said, and the investigation “went dormant.”

However, in April 2017, investigators said they discovered a person using Gonzalez’s name and found a recent address he was using. Police conducted surveillance and confirmed it was the same man.

Police started to renew and activate extradition requests, and on Jan. 25, 2021, the request was completed. Less than a month later, Gonzalez was arrested in Guatemala.

On May 3, he was ordered to be extradited, and he was booked on murder charges on May 18, police said.
