Man blocks black delivery driver in Oklahoma community to question him, video shows
A delivery driver in Oklahoma says a man refused to let him leave a gated community in Oklahoma City.
Travis Miller, a black man, was making a delivery in the Ashford Hills neighborhood of Oklahoma City when a man claiming to be part of the homeowners’ association blocked Miller’s exit from the community with a car and demanded to know why he was there, KFOR reported.
Miller streamed his interaction with the man to Facebook. It’s been viewed more than 103,000 times as of Thursday morning.
The video
Video of the incident shows a white car parked nose-to-nose with Miller’s truck, preventing him from driving forward. In the video, Miller repeatedly asks the man — who is out of the car and on his cellphone — to move out of the way.
“I asked you one question,” the man says in the video.
“And it’s none of your business,” Miller responds.
The man, who says his name is David Stewart, proceeds to tell Miller that it is his business because he’s part of the homeowners’ association and that Miller is on a private street, according to the video.
“Apparently you need a gate code to get in here, right?” Miller replies in the video. “So how did I get in here?”
The man asks, again, where Miller is going and Miller responds that he’s “going out,” asking the man to move his vehicle.
“All you have to do is just tell me where you’re going,” the man is heard saying.
“I don’t have to tell you s---,” Miller responds in the video.
Eventually, the man gets back in his car where he sits for several minutes before another man joins him and they approach Miller’s truck, the video shows.
The second man questions Miller, suggesting that perhaps Miller took a wrong turn into the neighborhood, according to the video.
“How do I make a wrong turn into a gated neighborhood?” Miller asks. “I need to have a gate code in order to get in, right? That’s common sense, right?”
The second man can be heard asking how Miller got a gate code and Miller responds that it’s none of the man’s business, according to the video.
Later, Miller told KFOR that he didn’t want to give out the customer’s personal information, the outlet reported.
The second man tells Miller that the police are coming and the two men stand outside the white car for several minutes. Eventually, the first man moves the white car out of Miller’s way, the video shows.
“I guess they must have contacted the customer and the customer came around and they spoke for a minute and he moved out the way,” Miller is heard saying in the video.
Miller stays put for several minutes, for fear it could look like he’s fleeing the scene if police are involved, he says in the video. He calls police, himself, to explain the situation and make sure it’s okay for him to leave before ultimately exiting the community, according to the video.
The aftermath
The video has nearly 950 comments, many from Facebook users expressing their support for Miller, some even urging him to file a complaint or file a police report.
“I’m glad you’re OK. Lord, thank you for covering,” one user wrote.
“I will pray that u get home safe to your beautiful wife and kids,” wrote another.
“I’m so sorry that you had to deal with that. People are so ignorant,” wrote a third.
Miller told KFOR that the incident came at a difficult time for his family.
“I just know that emotionally, it was hard to maintain restraint, especially when I’m dealing with death in the family, two family members within two days of each other,” Miller said, according to the outlet. “I just did the best I could to not make a bad situation worse.”
In an interview with KOCO, Miller called the incident “heartbreaking” for him, but added that he’s a “forgiving man,” the outlet reported.
KFOR attempted to contact David Stewart both at his home and over the phone but the phone number they obtained was disconnected, according to the outlet. Attempts to contact Stewart over Facebook were also unsuccessful, KFOR reported.
