After ‘smoking all night,’ pot user contacts Kansas City police to ask if it’s legal

A pot user who’d “been smoking all night” sent a Facebook message to the police department asking whether marijuana is legal in Kansas City.

It turned out to be a learning opportunity for anyone with the same question who has been too scared — or clear-minded — to ask cops the question directly.

“Is weed legal here?” the person wrote in the message to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. “I’ve been smoking all night and it only just now occurred to ask.”

Police shared a screenshot of the conversation on Facebook. While they didn’t show the reply, the police department did educate people who are curious about marijuana laws.

“For the sake of community education: Yes, possessing marijuana is still a misdemeanor (up to 35 grams) in KCMO,” police wrote. “Medical marijuana will change some of that.”

Missouri is undergoing the process of analyzing more than 2,000 applications for medical marijuana-related businesses in the state, the Kansas City Star reported. For dispensaries, the limit will be 24 per congressional district, according to the newspaper.

Eleven states and Washington, D.C. have legalized — and 15 states have decriminalized — adult-use cannabis, which usually allows retail sales and home-grown marijuana on a mixed basis,” as reported by POLITICO. “A majority of states have enacted medical marijuana laws, which allow eligible patients to obtain or grow cannabis to treat a range of conditions.”
