EnergySolutions’ Richland office now part of Atkins

Atkins has completed its purchase of a portion of EnergySolutions, including its work at the Hanford tank farms and other projects based at its Richland office.

The Richland office has served as the headquarters of EnergySolutions’ engineering technology group and employs about 200 people. It has been involved with technology used at Fukushima, Japan, to remove a range of radionuclides from contaminated water.

EnergySolutions is one of the owners of Washington River Protection Solutions, a limited liability corporation which holds the Department of Energy contract to manage the Hanford tank farms.

EnergySolutions also is known for building the EnergySolutions Engineering Laboratory in north Richland. It donated it to Washington State University Tri-Cities in August 2012, with a plan to lease it back until testing is completed related to keeping radioactive waste well mixed at the Hanford vitrification plant.

The lab will be renamed the Atkins Engineering Laboratory, pending university approval.

Atkins has purchased EnergySolutions’ project, products and technology segment.
