A team of culinary arts students from Tri-Tech Skills Center placed first at the Renton Technical College “Hot Foods” challenge on April 29.

The five-member team competed in a “black box challenge,” where students must use ingredients given to them in a box.

Team members include Kaity Garrison, Luke Mauth, Maddy Fox, Candrian Nieman and Brianna Cady. They received a $500 cash award and set of Mercer chef knives.

This was the first challenge of this type for the students who were selected to represent their school. They practiced during the evenings in March and April to prepare.

The students competed against Liberty High School of Renton and Newport Hills High School of Bellevue.
