A Southridge High School student was emergency expelled Wednesday after releasing pepper spray in a hallway during a passing period Wednesday morning.

Students were around when the spray was discharged, said Kennewick School District spokeswoman Robyn Chastain. The incident led school administrators to evacuate the building for about 20 minutes to allow the spray to dissipate.

“We take actions like this very seriously because there are individuals who have health conditions who can be adversely affected,” Chastain said in a statement.
