Richland fifth-graders take top award at math contest

A team of fifth-graders from Richland’s Lewis & Clark Elementary School took first place at a recent regional math competition at Carmichael Middle School.

More than 200 students from 19 schools participated in the Eastern Washington Fifth Grade Math Is Cool! Championships. The competition includes individual tests, relays, team tests and other contests.

Four Richland students also took the top four trophies in Division 1 at the competition:

▪ First: Anthony Petyuk of White Bluffs Elementary School

▪ Second: Sean Xu of Lewis & Clark

▪ Third: Nathan Carr of Badger Mountain Elementary School

▪ Fourth: PJ Ryan of Lewis & Clark
